Any device that transforms energy ( generally non electrical) from one to an other is called transducer.
Thus, transducer is a device which converts a physical quantity or physical condition into electrical signal.
In most of the instrumentation system, the input quantity is non electrical. In order to measure it, this non electrical quantity is generally converted into corresponding electrical signal. This conversion is done by the device called transducer.
CHARACTERISTICS:- A transducer must contain two elements.
1) SENSING ELEMENT :- It is that part of the transducer which senses or response to a physical quantity or a change in a physical quantity.
2) TRANSDUCTION ELEMENT :- It is that part of the transducer which transforms the response of the sensing element into an electrical signal.
CLASSIFICATION:- A transducer may be classified in a number of ways as given flow:
1) According to their application.
2) According to the method of conversion of physical quantity into electrical signal.
3) According to the nature of electrical output signal.
4) According to whether the transducer is active i.e., self E.M.F generating or passives i.e. externally powered.
5) According to the physical quantity being effected under measurement. The physical quantity involved in a transducer may be resistance , capacitance, inductance, voltage or current.
